De RICOH GR IIIx is ontwikkeld naar aanleiding van verzoeken van gebruikers om een nieuwe GR-serie camera die een nieuw perspectief toevoegt aan de alom geprezen RICOH GR III. De GR III is uitgebracht in maart 2019, voorzien van een 28mm groothoeklens en ontworpen om de essentiële waarden van de GR-serie verder te verbeteren: het optimaliseren van de beeldkwaliteit, snapshotmogelijkheden en draagbaarheid. De nieuw ontworpen 26,1 mm GR-lens biedt een beeldhoek van 40 mm in het 35 mm-formaat, dicht bij het eigen effectieve beeldveld van de fotograaf. Afhankelijk van de manier waarop de lens wordt gebruikt, kan deze veelzijdige beeldhoek verschillende beeldweergaven creëren: u kunt een beeld vastleggen dat vergelijkbaar is met een beeld dat is gemaakt met een semi-groothoek van 30 mm, of een totaal andere visuele expressie creëren als bij een standaard beeldhoek van 50 mm. De camera biedt ook een reeks nieuwe en verbeterde functies voor nabewerking na het maken van opnamen, waarmee u de gemaakte beelden naar wens van de fotograaf kunt bewerken.
